Spoken English

Introduction

Spoken English is an integrated approach to the learning of practical English conversational skills. The course will familiarise students with the sounds and syntax of English, and the use of the language in communication. The course is taught at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels.

Speech Training

Each course session begins with speech training. The International Phonetic Alphabet is taught at the beginning of every course, to provide a common basis for discussing the sounds of English. Students will practice speech sounds, as well as English stress, rhythm and intonation patterns. Special difficulties that Asian speakers encounter are emphasised.

 Grammar

Linguistic research in Singapore and other Asian coutries has established that most grammatical errors fall into patterns. The grammar lessons in the Spoken English course are guided by this insight, and are focussed in a way that most grammar teaching cannot be, concentrating on the aspects of grammar that pose problems for Asian speakers.
