Preparatory course for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Introduction

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand American English at university level. It measures English language proficiency in reading, listening, and writing. It is used by universities in the United States, Canada and a number of other countries. Polytechnics and universities in Singapore also use the TOEFL as an English language entrance test for international students. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

The TOEFL test is conducted by ETS, the world's largest private educational testing organisation.

The TOEFL Examination

The TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the Internet, is an important part of your journey to study in an English-speaking country. The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

Course Structure

Listening

  • Students will familiarize themselves with listening exercises using excerpts from academic lectures and conversations about campus situations.
  • Skills include identifying the main idea, recognizing a speaker's purpose, classifying items into categories and identifying a sequence of events

Reading

  • Students will have reading exercises which require an understanding of academic passages written in English.
  • Key skills include scanning for information, making inferences and completing charts and tables

Writing

  • Students will be given writing exercises which help them organize their ideas and express them in clear, academic English
  • Skills include taking notes, making an outline and correcting writing errors

Speaking

  • Student will be given speaking exercises to help them organize their thoughts and effectively present spoken responses
  • Skills include taking notes, creating an outline and summarizing

Proficiency in Oral Language
Develop effective speaking skills for academic and social purposes including conversations, classroom discussions, short talks, formal discourse and oral presentations.

Proficiency in Listening Comprehension
Be able to listen to and understand the details in various listening contexts.

Be able to apply appropriate techniques to read and analyze level texts.

Demonstrate competence in managing the writing process and producing effective written products.

In addition to the objectives described above, the underlying objective of the courses is the nurturing of self-pride and self-identity in each pupil’s linguistic and cultural heritage.

Learning Outcome

  • To converse and argue in various contexts, on both a personal and academic level;
  • To understand interventions of a certain length in various fields when standard language is used;
  • To read texts of a certain length in an academic context;
  • To summarize information from different sources and media;
  • To write a structured formal or argumentative text of a certain length;

  • To develop independent learning strategies, especially those relevant to exams

Delivery Mode

Classroom learning, lessons to be conducted at NYU Language School.

Teachers

All our teachers are registered with the Committee for Private Education (CPE). Committee for Private Education (CPE) is part of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).

Prerequisites

English at the advanced level or through a placement test conducted by NYU Language School; or

At least a pass in English or equivalent in your home country.

Assessment and Examination

A test is conducted every 6 weeks, culminating in the final course examination. Your teacher will write a detailed course report, which will include your grades in listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as an evaluation of your progress in the class.

Your grade in this course will be based on the following components:

Award

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an in-house certificate within 21 days from the last day of the course.

External Grading and Certificate

Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least one essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score. For the TOEFL iBT test, administered via the Internet, you will receive four scaled section scores and a total score:

  • Reading Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Listening Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Speaking Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Writing Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Total Score (0-120)

In addition to your scores, your test taker score report also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do.

There is no passing or failing TOEFL score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test within 12 days of your existing appointment.
